Psychiatric services for the Telluride Community. This expansion of services is made possible by a supporting grant from The Colorado Health Foundation.
Karls, a psychiatrist from The Midwest Center for Mental Health in Norwood will be scheduling two days a month at TMC for patient evaluations and visits while assisting the primary care practitioners with ongoing patient care. Lori E. Raney, M.D., a psychiatrist from Dolores, who has been working with TMC practitioners and patients every other Tuesday since April, will continue as a member of the Visiting Specialist Program. This will allow for patients in the Telluride Hospital District region to set up appointments with a psychiatrist on a weekly basis.
“It is important to have the ability to offer this type of continuity of care here at the medical center,” said Sharon Grundy, M.D., director of primary care. “Otherwise, patients either drive long distances for care or go without care.”
A recent health assessment done on behalf of the San Miguel Health Initiative, reported a strong need for increased mental health care in the Telluride region. The grant from The Colorado Health Foundation helps to offer providers at Telluride Medical Center an opportunity to work together with visiting psychiatrists to provide mental health services, including drug therapy with ongoing care and referrals for counseling and psychotherapy.
The grant also supports a series of community lectures on mental health issues such as depression, family dysfunction and the importance of mental health in one’s overall well being. This series of lectures, offered by guest speakers, will be offered at the Wilkinson Library and are scheduled for August, October and February.
The Visiting Specialist Program allows for TMC patients to schedule to see specialists in Orthopaedics, Podiatry, Cardiology, Dermatology/ Plastic Surgery, Midwives, and now Psychiatry.
Karls began seeing patients at the TMC on June 6 and will be at the TMC again on June 27 and alternating Fridays thereafter. To schedule an appointment with Karls, call 970/327-4449. Call the TMC at 728-3848 with questions or to schedule an appointment with Raney.
