The gathering will open with the Open Heart Drum Circle drumming for peace on earth, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars #874 will lead a service of remembrance for our fallen heroes who gave their lives for peace. The blessing of the river is sponsored in part by the Friends of the River Uncompahgre.
Following the service, two free Spiritual Cinema films – Humanity Ascending and Visions of a Universal Humanity will be shown (at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.) At 3 p.m., community is invited to gather around the duck pond in Baldridge Park for a community photo. At 4 p.m., Bernie Heideman from Paonia will lead the Dances of Universal Peace under the park trees. From 6-6:30 p.m., a Compassion Meditation for Peace will take place at Baldridge Park, followed by a Peace Potluck and Musical Program. Bring a potluck dish to share and your own table service; drinks will be provided.
Several local churches will have a special peace service on Sunday, and the weekend closes with the dedication of the Peace Symbol at 138 N. Mesa. Throughout the weekend, stop in at the Montrose Library to make handprints on the Hands for Peace Poster.
The Weekend of Unity and Peace in Montrose began three years ago in response to the United Nations International Day of Peace, held on September 21. Since that time it has grown in scope and sponsors. This year’s United Nations theme is “Peace = Future.”
Sponsors include the Ute Indian Museum, Friends of the River Uncompahgre, Western Colorado Friends of Tibet, the Whole Life Network, Veterans of Foreign Wars #874, Universal Interfaith Church, Hillcrest United Church of Christ, Montrose Regional Library, Dances of Universal Peace-Bernie Heideman, Debbie Ferris, and the Open Heart Drum Circle.
