MONTROSE – A 19-year-old Montrose man, Zachary Thomas Culmer, is dead after being stabbed at about 4 a.m. Sunday morning during a fight at a house party in the 14500 block of Mustang Lane in Montrose. A 17-year-old male, Isaac Garcia, has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder in the case and is being held at the Department of Youth Services in Grand Junction.
Formal charges have not yet been filed.
Dr. Thomas Canfield, Montrose County coroner, said an autopsy revealed that Culmer’s cause of death was a stab wound to the neck, and the manner of death is homicide, according to Montrose County spokeswoman Kristin Scuderi.
The case is being investigated by the coroner’s office as well as the Montrose County Sheriff, Montrose Police, the 7th Judicial District and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
When deputies arrived at the scene of the stabbing, they found a silver-colored vehicle stopped in the road with four people standing nearby. Culmer was lying on the ground, deputies reported, with one person tending to him. Deputies gave medical attention before emergency services personnel arrived. Culmer was taken to Montrose Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Details about the stabbing are still emerging, but the investigation revealed that Culmer came to “a large house party” uninvited, leading to a fight.
“An altercation ensued which resulted in the death of Mr. Culmer,” according to a Montrose County news release.
