DOLORES COUNTY – A 48-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle in a single-vehicle accident on Colorado State Highway 145 near Lizard Head Pass in Dolores County on Friday, August 20, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Roy Mitchell of Grand Junction was traveling west on the highway toward Rico at shortly after 2 p.m. when he lost control of his Honda Enduro 650 motorcycle on the mountain road. He slid some 56 feet and rolled one-quarter of a roll before being ejected from his bike, which slid another 100 feet before coming to a stop.
“When he came down, he wasn’t wearing a helmet,” said District Five Accident Reconstruction Sergeant Chad Martin. Although CPR was performed on Mitchell for some time following the accident, he succumbed to his injuries.
Alcohol was being investigated as a possible factor in the accident, as is customary in the case of a fatality. The Dolores County Coroner did not yet have the results of the autopsy and toxicology screen performed on Mitchell at press-time.
“Anytime there is a fatal [accident] the coroner will do a toxicology screen on it,” said Martin. “I don’t know that it’s going to be that big of a factor” in this case, he added.
