OURAY – Last season was “quite the experience” for rookie coach Lena Martinez, a native of Ouray and a one-time high school volleyball star there.

The Lady Trojans of 2009 didn’t win a single match.

Martinez inherited a team that had only one player with varsity experience. “It was a big challenge,” Martinez said. But things are already looking up for 2010. “Everyone’s attitudes are greatly improved. I had Tracy Hill (former state champion basketball player for Ridgway High School) come and give the girls a motivational speech. That really seemed to change them. We also had a nutritionist come and talk. It’s all about educating the girls about being athletes.

“There’s a huge amount of talent on this team,” Martinez said. The coach is counting on three seniors, Julie Sirotek, Sara Martinez and Julia Schlageter, plus junior Nicole Edder, “to carry the varsity team” this year.

For her part, Martinez is “looking for small victories, baby steps. Everybody loves the Cinderella story” of a team coming from nowhere to win a championship, she said. But at the end of the day, better teamwork, improved skills – and a few numbers in the win column – will make the second-year coach proud.
