Vignettes 2010: Velvet Secrets featuring the Legendary Ladies

OURAY – Join Madam Victoria Sweet and her “girls” as they disclose the secrets of their lives in an 1800’s parlor house. What events in their past brought them to this underworld profession? Meet shrewd business entrepreneurs, widows, Hurdy-Gurdy Girls, housekeepers, and women down on their luck, who traveled west to mining towns and camps – women who had few opportunities and much hardship.

The “Legendary Ladies” will entertain and inform at Wright Opera House on Saturday evening of Aug. 28 for the fifth annual Vignettes of History presented by the Ouray County Historical Society. The event is a fundraiser for the society and the Ouray County Museum.

The Legendary Ladies are a non-profit educational group of women who perform across the state of Colorado promoting the history of famous and infamous women of the West. The Legendary Ladies are under the direction of Kyle Neidt, Ph.D. She is also the academic advisor for theater and dance at the University of Colorado at Boulder. After performing last year to a sold-out audience at the Wright, this award-wining troupe is back by popular demand.

Each Legendary Lady selects her character, does her own research, writes her script, and designs her costume, and then Neidt reviews each script and each performer’s readiness. The Ladies’ latest stage play, Velvet Secrets, portrays the human side of the world’s oldest profession.

Saturday’s historical evening will begin with an open house with hors d’oeuvres at

Venue Roscoe Fox, and then continue with an elegant dinner at the Beaumont Hotel. Finally participants will progress to the Velvet Secrets performance at the Wright Opera House.

Tickets for the evening are $75 per person for the entire evening or $25 per person for the performance only. For more information or reservations, call the Ouray County Museum at 970/325-4576.
