Town Council on Tuesday, in another 4 to 3 vote, passed Land Use Code changes that will, among other things, reduce employee housing in many ways.
How is this being done? Here is the most egregious example: P&Z is proposing that building residential penthouses on the third floor, the golden ring for every developer, is a substantial benefit to the community.
By so doing, penthouse condominiums are considered to have the same benefit to the town as employee housing, hotel rooms and open space.
That one change is so contrary to our community goals as to be ridiculous and laughable if it were not so sad and imminent.
Penthouse units are why the developer is building the project. That’s where the money is! By this change building penthouse condominiums would become the same thing as building employee housing. They must be kidding! Which do you think a developer will choose?
It’s time for the citizens of Telluride to confront this non-representative, Bush-like majority of Town Council.
Very truly yours,
– Michael Zivian, former Chairman of Planning and Zoning
