OURAY – Sharpen those tools and crampons, wax up those boots and seam seal those coats, the opening weekend of the Ouray Ice Park on Saturday, Dec. 20 promises to be spectacular.
The ice park is currently making ice seven days a week in preparation for opening, and with temperatures as cold as 23 degrees, impressive ice formation has occurred in the gorge.
Looking ahead, the 14th Annual Ouray Ice Festival will be held Jan. 8-11, and it should be one of the best yet. The 500-plus competitor spots filled within 10 minutes of the festival’s clinics being posted online on Nov. 5. For more information on the festival, visit www.ourayicefestival.com.
You can help support the world’s greatest free ice climbing asset by becoming a member of the park. The Ouray Ice Park is now two months into its 2009 Membership Drive Campaign, and this year a membership costs only $40 for the entire climbing season. Memberships can be ordered online or by visiting the Best Western Twin Peaks, Ouray Chalet, Ouray Comfort Inn, Ouray Mountain Sports, or the Box Canyon Lodge.
Members of the ice park receive special discounts at local businesses, including lodging. By some estimates, a $40 membership will pay for itself in discounts during a two-day stay in Ouray.
