After reading the reasons put forth by the commissioners, trying to substantiate their approval of the cell tower for emergency response and law enforcement even though it exceeds county visual codes, I simply must, in good conscience, respond. All of their reasoning may sound good, but is simply not true.
The real truth is that transmissions from cell towers interfere with emergency radios, forcing personnel to use cell phones instead. Documented in B. Blake Levitt's book, Cell Towers: Wireless Convenience or Environmental Hazard?, cell phone transmissions are also known to cause more accidents and jam 911 calls, making situations more dangerous for residents.
Which brings up the other important fact completely missed or ignored in the Commissioners approval...that of the disastrous health consequences to Ouray County residents caused by exposure to the radio/microwave radiation broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This must be the Commissioners’ moral, if not legal responsibility. They were elected to protect the health and well being of citizens of Ouray County. Research proving the health consequences of exposure to radio/microwave radiation is so overwhelming that it can no longer be ignored.
The TeleComm Act was pushed through by industry lobbyist to prevent these health effects from being used to refuse tower siting. Why? Because they know full well what the effects of this radiation are. They are not interested in your health, but only in making money. This is an outrage and communities across the country are fighting, and winning, to take back lawful, constitutionally protected control of their community.
To go into more detail here would take volumes. Don't take my word for it. Google it. Try “cell tower radiation” and “electro sensitive.” Some great websites to get you started are: www.es-uk.onfo; www.electricalpollution.com; www.iaff.com (international firefighters who have placed a moratorium on the construction of cell towers on fire stations because of the explosion of brain tumors in those firefighters); www.mast-victims.org. These are just a beginning.
Countries all around the world, Chile, Israel, France, Bahrain, to name a few, are taking down cell towers because of the disastrous health problems to their citizens. Ouray County residents must demand that these concerns be examined. Other communities have successfully rejected the construction of these towers. Is your health, and that of your children, so unimportant that you would risk it all for the 'convenience' of a cell phone tower?
