According to Investigator Joel Burk of the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found Powell’s body floating face down in one of the outdoor hot springs pools after receiving a 911 emergency call at approximately 7:30 a.m. Friday morning. Ouray County Coroner Gary Miller was notified and also responded to the scene.
According to Burk, Powell had signed in at the front desk at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4 and was last seen in the pool areas by other guests at approximately 11:45 p.m. that night. Witnesses reported that she had been acting “strange and erratic,” Burk said in a press release.
Evidence at the scene leads investigators to believe that alcohol was involved and foul play is not suspected.
An autopsy has been ordered and Sheriff Dominic “Junior” Mattivi said more information on the unattended death should be released on Monday or Tuesday next week after the autopsy has been completed.
