Tiger Woods as Arrogant as Ever in Media Spectacle

Well, I don’t know about you but I totally bought into Tiger Woods’ apology statement/come-to-Jesus/blame the media/ press conference last week and he is totally off the hook now after he slept with Perkins waitresses, Vegas showgirls and the like behind his wife, Elin’s back. He totally meant everything he was saying in that 12-minute tense speech that was must-see-TV last week, right? He is really sorry, right? Yeah, right.

Tiger, in his Friday morning speech with friends and selected reporters, looked like a 52-semitruck pileup on Vail Pass. It was horrific and nauseating, yet I couldn’t turn away. And I am still trying to figure out why he produced the media stunt anyway.

There are no laws that said Tiger had to get in front of the camera to apologize and from the looks and sounds of it, he isn’t yet really sorry he did it and doesn’t feel like he should be sorry. He’s Tiger Woods damn it. He is this generation’s greatest athlete. He can do whatever he wants. His scripted, unemotional and uninspired speech did not help his cause with his fans one bit. It was almost like he was forced out there to apologize against his will like a mother forces her son to apologize to the store clerk after getting caught stealing a Weird Al album. Yes I did it. I am not sorry for doing it, I am sorry for getting caught. You could tell that Tiger Woods was pissed at the notion that he had to stoop so low and actually say he is sorry.

Perhaps we are learning who the real Tiger Woods is after all. We all know he’s a great golfer and businessman. He likes birdies, money and sex. The sex – at least they way Tiger likes it – he can’t have anymore. And the money made with golf and endorsements he can still have, but only if he apologizes and makes nice. Just maybe there is an endorsement out there for him somewhere. That is what Friday’s news conference was all about – getting back to business and back to making money. Tiger has never cared what his fans think and he obviously doesn’t now. Believe me, this was all about business.

For those of you who say he is truly sorry for what he did, why was the whole media event done on his terms and scripted? No questions? More importantly, no humility? He came off with such arrogance, I liked him less after his statement.

The part I liked the most on Friday morning was when his apology turned to an angry tirade aimed at the media for suggesting that Elin actually hit him on Thanksgiving night.

“I have a lot to atone for, but there is one issue I really want to discuss,” Tiger said. “Some people have speculated that Elin somehow hurt or attacked me on Thanksgiving night. It angers me that people would fabricate a story like that.”

Well, Tiger, I guess you could have put that fire out quickly by telling the media what happened instead of running away from it like you did. Instead, here we have a sober celebrity who wrecked his car, his wife was involved and there are two broken windows in his SUV caused by a golf club and Tiger says, my wife tried to help rescue me through the back windows. Are we all that stupid? I guess so.

The fact of the matter here with the media is that it has given Tiger nothing but nonstop, world’s best golfer coverage for the last 10 years. All the positive media didn’t seem to hurt him so bad, did it? He was on the cover of every legible magazine in every nation from here to China. Unfortunately, with the media, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Want to be as rich and popular as Tiger? The media and all its problems come with it. Tiger is not a private person and he should have known that before he scribbled his room number on the back of that Perkins receipt.

I hope Tiger is able to get back to doing what everybody likes about the guy – playing good golf. And maybe, just maybe he will learn to be more human in all of this and show a little less arrogance.
