The contests, which will be held June 14, will feature 48 players from throughout the state representing classifications 1-5A. The athletes are chosen based upon league nominations and subsequent recommendations by coaches attending the selection meeting.
Four squads mixing those five classifications are assembled from the group of 48, and games pairing the teams are contested during the afternoon. The weekend begins with the Rocky Mountain News kick-off banquet on Friday, June 13, at 6 p.m.
Martinez, who helped lead the Trojans to its first state tournament appearance since 1995, was the No. 1 nomination from the Mountain League, which includes Crested Butte, DeBeque, Edwards Vail Christian, Ouray, and Ridgway. The league will disband for the 2008-09 school year.
In each of Martinez’s seasons with Ouray, the Trojans won the Mountain League, including this year’s 8-0 team, which also finished sixth in the state boasting a 19-7 record after losing to Crested Butte 61-50 in the consolation final on March 15 in Clune Arena at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
Martinez averaged 9 points in the Trojans’ three games at the state tournament and 8.4 overall.
The last participant from Ouray to compete in the all-state game was 2005 graduate Chris Scott.
