"It's a huge boost for any organization to find the right person from among your staff," said Emily Dresslar, executive director. "Luke came in the door as that perfect fit with great energy and enthusiasm, a knowledge of this region and a good understanding of how the Academy works."
Brown, who began his new position in September, will oversee the 100-plus Telluride Academy programs offered annually and a summer staff of more than 40 instructors. He replaces former program director Nancy Scarborough, who recently started the new school year as the elementary teacher in Rico, Colo.
"The Telluride Academy is a great organization, one that I am extremely proud to have been involved with for the past three summers," said Brown. "This transition into the Program Director role is a tremendous honor and presents me a great opportunity to contribute my ideas and passions for the betterment of this organization and this community"
Planning is already underway for the 2007 spring and summer season, said Brown.
"The Academy has some great trip ideas for next year," he said. "Many of these excursions are geared towards engaging more participation from our local teenagers; getting them 'out of the box.' I would love to see the enhancement of our Outdoor Leadership Program as something that continues and grows every year. I would also, like to create an opportunity for more intense wilderness trips for some of our younger participants.
"Overall, my goal is to continue and further the Academy's commitment to creating positive experiences for all ages," he continued. "I am thankful for this wonderful opportunity to introduce and share this incredible region with all Academy participants."
The Telluride Academy is the region's largest summer enrichment and adventure program for students from ages 5-17.
With more than 100 unique programs offered annually, Telluride Academy students participate in activities that include rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting and kayaking, art and crafts, original theater, science and ecology exploration, hiking and adventure travel.
The new 2007 summer catalog will be released during the winter holiday season and membership enrollment for 2007 begins in January. An Early Bird special will be offered to families living in and attending school in the R-1 School District starting in February.
