Applications for Telluride Council for the Arts and Humanities Small Grants and Artists Fellowships are now available. The Small Grants program funds artists and non-profit arts and humanities organizations up to $1,000 each. The Artist Fellowships fund individual visual artists up to $500 to undertake formal or informal education, or small individual projects that display artistic merit and originality. The deadline for applications is Monday, Aug. 7 at 5 p.m.

Continuing with TCAH's new policy, all applicants are required to consult with TCAH Executive Director Liz Lance prior to submitting their grant request.

The Small Grants Program, funded by the Commission for Community Assistance, Arts and Special Events, the Telluride Foundation and San Miguel County, is a unique aspect of TCAH's programming. The program is designed to accommodate smaller projects that are not available for other non-profit funding within the county, truly accomplishing TCAH's grassroots mission of developing a flourishing cultural environment in the Telluride region.

The Small Grants Program funds a wide diversity of projects, from book and music projects to parenting classes to educating festivarians on the benefits of composting.

Past recipient Pat Barber received $750 to produce a CD of local musicians and songwriters featuring over 50 local musicians. The Telluride Ski and Golf Company is distributing 3,500 copies of the completed CD through its promotional materials, and copies of the CD will also be available to locals. Barber reported that since getting Telluride Row musicians together to record on the CD, impromptu live musical performances around town have increased.

Teresa Frank received $1,000 to produce a documentary film, "Connecting to Your Food," on the regional organic farming movement.

The Telluride Air Force received $600 to help produce their Airman's Fall Fly-in. This event draws paragliders and hang gliders from around the world to Telluride to fly over and around the Western San Juans.

Travis Rummel and Ben Knight received $1,000 to finish their film on fly-fishing in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Their TCAH grant helped fund their chartered flights to gather aerial footage of the dry hatch.

The Artist Fellowship Program is designed to further the artistic development of the applicant by funding an educational venture or a specific project. Past recipient Anton Ward received funding to continue working on his neon art bicycles. Ward sought to research and experiment with innovative materials to explore the boundaries between function and art.

Andrew Ward received funding to attend a woodworking course. The class brought together the skills, knowledge, aesthetic sensitivities and teaching style of four notable artists working in metal, wood, glass and stone. As a wood smith, the class offered Ward the opportunity to expand his art form.

Dulcie Clarkson, a producer of award winning films and videos, requested funds for a specific screen writing software program. She is currently working on several screenplays and the software has become an essential tool in finishing several projects.

TCAH Grant and fellowship applications are available online at www.telluridearts.org and at the TCAH office, located at 283 S. Fir St. in the Stronghouse Building. For more information, contact Liz Lance at 728-3930.
