Blind Skier Skylar Covich, 17, and his guide James Heit of Redding, Calif., were invited to Telluride along with three other low vision students and their guides to ski with Telluride's Adaptive Ski Program. Covich, who was born blind with the ability to detect light perception, has been skiing for seven years, primarily at Mt. Shasta. Through the use of Eco Therapy Eye Drops, he can now see shadows and trees as well. | Covich is a senior at Shasta High School in Redding, where in addition to skiing and studying, he also plays the piano and clarinet. He has already received a scholarship to St. Mary’s University, but is hoping to attend Stanford. Covich’s guide, Heit, works at Shasta High School as an adaptive physical education teacher. The two train together every week, with emphasis on cardio, weight training and plyometrics. Covich puts a lot of trust in Heit as his guide, coach and friend. (Photo by Jody Vanden Branden)
