Editor:

The New Community Coalition would like to thank all of those who came to presentations by our Zero Waste expert Gary Liss this past week. Special thanks to Corinne and the folks with the Out Loud Lecture Series who sponsored Gary’s standing-room-only public presentation, “Cooling the Planet with Zero Waste” last Tuesday evening. We appreciate the input of all those who stayed to share ideas on how we can improve the wasteful ways in our own community. Andrew, Quillen, Emma and Kelsey – we especially appreciate your presence and comments made. As Kelsey likes to point out – we tell our kids what to do for 18 years, then hand them world to “fix.” We need to listen to them, NOW.

It was a pleasure to see the governmental and community support for the concepts presented. The Mountain Village, Town of Telluride and San Miguel County will continue to work with Gary, through The New Community Coalition to create a Zero Waste Plan for our region. Concentrating on reducing and reusing creates win-win situations where businesses and individuals save money, economic diversity is enhanced through new jobs and we do our part for a healthy environment.

As we work on that plan, I invite anyone with ideas about how we can use less, reuse more and recycle when all else fails to contact us at The New Community Coalition at newcommunitycoalition@gmail.com or 728-1340. We have a Resource Recovery/Recycling Working Group you can be a part of, or you’re welcome to just share ideas.

What a great community we have!
