Three West End Wrestlers Win State Titles

DENVERNorwood’s Hugh Hardman and Stryker Lane and Nucla’s Ty Sickels each won a state championship at the 73rd Colorado High School Activities Association 2A wrestling tournament held Thursday, Feb. 21 through Saturday, Feb. 23 in the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Hardman, a junior, successfully defended his 140-pound title by pinning Lyons senior Tyler Eberhart in 1 minute, 36 seconds. Hardman finished 41-1 on the season.

Lane, who won the 189 state title last year as a sophomore while at Nucla, captured the 215 crown this year by pinning Burlington’s Isaiah Churchwell in 1:42. Lane finished with an impressive 20-0 mark on the year.

Hardman and Lane, as well as fourth-place finisher Darrel Jenson (285), helped lead the Mavericks to a fifth-place finish with 83 points, placing behind Grand Valley (146), Paonia (113), Wiggins (105) and Burlington (90).

For Nucla, Sickels obtained the 130 title with a 4-2 decision over Ryan Gallegos of Grandview to finish 35-10.

The Mustangs junior Ty Spangler also finished sixth.

As a team, the four Nucla wrestlers finished a collective 16th with 45 points.
