DELTA – The Norwood girls’ and the Ouray boys’ basketball teams survived first-day action of the eight-team Class 1A, District 1 tournament at Delta Middle School on Thursday, Feb. 28.

Both teams will compete today, Friday, Feb. 29 in semifinal action at Delta High School.

Area teams losing their first round contests were the Norwood boys, Ouray girls, and the Ridgway boys’ and girls’ squads.

The third-seeded Norwood girls team (16-4) defeated sixth-seeded Ridgway 65-28 and will play second-seeded Crested Butte (18-2) in a semifinal at 3 p.m. With a win, the Mavericks, who defeated Crested Butte 50-44 back on Jan. 12, would advance to the district final against top-seeded Dove Creek or fourth-seeded Walden North Park, scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at DHS.

The top-seeded Ouray boys’ team (15-5) routed eighth-seeded Dove Creek 70-11 on Thursday evening and will play DeBeque (5-15) at 7:30 p.m. today, Friday Feb. 29. The winner moves on to the district final against third-seeded Edwards Vail Christian (14-6) or second-seeded Crested Butte (15-4), scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at DHS.

With the loss to Crested Butte, the Ridgway girls’ squad (7-13), which trailed 31-13 at halftime, was eliminated from the tournament.

The fourth-seeded Norwood boys’ team fell to DeBeque, 54-50. The Mavericks (9-11) trailed as much as 42-31 late in the third quarter, but a late-game rally fell short.

The Ridgway boys’ squad, seeded sixth, gave third-seeded Edwards Vail Christian a brief scare in the first half – the Demons trailed 17-12 midway through the second quarter – but the Saints’ Jaryd Francis was too much for Ridgway (4-16) as the 6-foot-6 senior dunked three times on the Demons.

The fifth-seeded Ouray girls’ season ended with a 59-38 setback to fourth-seeded North Park. The Trojans (11-9) had three players foul out
