The youngest painter ever inducted into the Illustrators Hall of Fame, Fuchs was revered by artists young and old for his painterly style.
Many of his contemporaries believe he transformed the field of illustration, with compositions far ahead of his time.
His last show at the Telluride Gallery, a 50-year retrospective of his work, included 85 paintings and drawings, and vintage work as well as freshly painted pieces, from Italian landscapes to Colorado Ave.
“During his four appearances in Telluride, he and his wife Babe always liked to linger for a few extra days to take in the scenery and meet the locals,” says Will Thompson of the Telluride Gallery. “He genuinely liked this place.”
Having become very selective in accepting commissions in his later years, he continued to paint Telluride repeatedly.
Recent publications highlighting Fuchs’ Telluride paintings included Fine Art Connoisseur, American Artist, and the 2008 Eddie Bauer Winter Catalog.
