Swan, the first of seven children, was born in Ouray on Oct. 7, 1915. She is the daughter of David and Ella (Rathmell) Pilcher. Swan was raised in Telluride where her father worked in a dairy and then owned the Telluride Market.
After graduating from Telluride High School, Swan married the love of her life, Gust V. Swan, on June 14, 1934. They were blessed with two daughters, also raised in Telluride.
Swan worked at her family’s grocery store and later owned S & S. She taught Sunday School at Christ Church. She moved to Montrose in 1977.
Swan was an avid sports fan, loved to sew and crochet, and especially enjoyed playing bridge.
Swan is survived by her two daughters, Dorothy and husband Charles Carstensen, and Gerry and husband Jack Knapp, of Montrose; and one sister, Mary Jane Willers of Phoenix, Ariz.
Swan was the proud and loving grandmother of five grandchildren: Eric, David and Andrew Carstensen of California; Leia Edson of Olathe, Colo.; and Melanie Hale, of Mountain View, Wyo.; and six great-grandchildren.
Swan was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, and five siblings: Bill and Eugene Pilcher, Alice Mahoney, Kathryn Knight, and Hazel Vela.
A memorial service is planned at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 16, at the Lone Tree Cemetery in Telluride.
