Barbed Wire and Wild Flowers by the McCreary's was published last year and combines the sensitive observations of Becky's poetry with the curious characters and clever plots of Paul's stories. An added feature is the photography. Edgar Allen Poe fans will enjoy Paul's “The Man at the Window,” while gardeners everywhere will look at fall garden work with melancholy, identifying with Becky's “Autumn Garden.”
Her “A Kind Hearted Woman Lives Here” is also included. It took first place in 2005 at the Mesa State College Foundation's Readers' Festival.
In Wild Raspberries, Paulson presents readers with a cornucopia of images and wonderings, including two poems nominated for the Pushcart Prize – “The Color of Snow” (2009) and “Hollyhocks” (2007). Vivid word selection complements the varying rhythms in her poems. In this collection, Paulson recognizes the universality of mankind, from the “Flag Woman” on the highway, to the emergency room doctor treating her son in “To the Young Doctor”. The poignancy of “Grandfather’s Magic” is not to be missed.
Both books are available at Buckskin Booksellers in Ouray, Cimarron Books and Coffee in Ridgway, and Around the Corner Gallery in Montrose. Becky and Paulson will read current works, as well as from their books, at Backstreet Bagel on Main Street in Ouray Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
