The end of the school year is a crazy time, with seniors graduating, students trying to check out, and the collection of spring uniforms, but I would like to take a little time to look back at the year that was in Ridgway athletics.
It was an enjoyable year as my first year as the Ridgway Athletic Director. The year started out with the high school sports of boys golf, boys soccer and girls volleyball. The golf team had good showings over the course of their season with four participants. The boys soccer team finished with a record of 3-5-2. The volleyball team had a record that did not show how far they came during the year; they showed great improvement throughout the season. The middle school volleyball season was a success as they shared the regular season league title with Ouray, and finished second in the Mountain League tournament.
With little time to breathe we jumped into the winter season. The highlight of the middle school season was our boys basketball team going undefeated and winning the Mountain League tournament. The middle school girls team showed great improvement during the year. The high school boys and girls basketball teams came a long way with a new coach and showed great improvement over the course of the year. The future looks encouraging for the high school basketball teams, because there are no seniors on the girls team and only three seniors on the boys team.
With no time to rest between winter and spring sports, we saw the return of baseball to Ridgway. The young team showed a great improvement during the season, almost making the district final. The spring also saw the beginning of girls golf at Ridgway. All three girls that participated will return next year and hopefully there will be more students participate next year. Girls soccer had a successful season, finishing fourth in the league and playing hard in every game. Probably the highlight of the spring season was the two Ridgway athletes that placed at the state track meet. Jim Perkovich placed eighth in the long jump and Lauren Hagemeyer placed fifth in the high jump.
All in all, after my first year in Ridgway I am pleased with the direction that our sports programs are headed. There is a lot of excitement for the future of Ridgway Demon Athletics. I would like to thank everyone for their support and help over the year. Have a great summer and I will look forward to seeing everyone back in August.
