Over the past week or so, a variety of civilian and military sources in Washington, D.C. and Kabul have accused the Iranian government of supplying weapons to the Taliban.
But check out the narrative flow, and a tawdry pattern reveals itself. The higher up the ladder you go, the more extreme the accusations. Military officers on the scene downplay the reports, stating that there’s no way of telling how Taliban acquired the Iranian weaponry: the Pakistani Army, or freelance criminals, could have bough the stuff from Iran and then passed it on to Taliban. They add that the intercepted arms are not really
that significant, in the big picture of Taliban activity: a few mortars, some mortar ammo, and some C4 explosives.
But when Secretary of Defense Gates and State Department hack-flack Nick Burns massage the story, it sounds like Iran is THE major problem for the U.S. in Afghanistan, and it had better stop. The unspoken “or else” is that massive naval Armada cruising off the Iranian coast; it’s obscenely obvious, Bush and Co. are just itching to unleash the dogs of war again. And on the wrong enemy again.
Funny thing (actually, it’s not funny at all): Taliban was invented by Pakistan, and armed, advised and trained by Pakistan throughout its wretched history. By the time the U.S. intervened in Afghanistan after 9/11, Afghans were so sick of Taliban that over 50 percent of the movement’s frontline fighters were non-Afghans, mostly Pakistani soldiers in civilian garb, fanatical “students” from fundamentalist madrassas in Pakistan, and Arabs, Chechens and other foreign riffraff infiltrated into Afghanistan by ISI, the Pakistan military’s intelligence wing. It was all paid for (big surprise) by our other great ally in the War on Terror, Saudi Arabia.
Even today, every Taliban prisoner interrogated by the US military in Afghanistan tells the same story: how they were recruited by the Pakistan Army, often by blackmail, trained, supplied with weapons, and then sent into Afghanistan to kill U.S. soldiers and our Afghan allies.
If it weren’t for Pakistan, and Saudi blood money, Taliban WOULD NEVER HAVE EXISTED. Period.
But Pakistan and Saudi Arabia remain honored, cherished friends. In contrast, Iran helped us capture and detain al-Qaeda leaders when we invaded Afghanistan after 9/11; but now a few Iranian weapons show up in Taliban hands, and it’s the casus belli of the century.
I don’t know about you, but I’m ------ing sick of the oil companies and the well-heeled Saudi and Pakistan lobbies inside the Beltway playing America foe fools: sponsoring terrorism right before our eyes, killing our soldiers and allies, and getting away with it time and time again.
First Iraq, next Iran, and meanwhile bin Laden and his pals lounge around in comfort courtesy of the Pakistani Army, deluged with hundreds of millions of petro-dollars sent by rich Saudi Arabians, plotting and planning the next, much worse 9/11. And they are safe as safe can be, thanks to the fools, crooks and traitors here in the U.S. who point us in the wrong direction time and time again. If you aren’t mad as hell about it, there’s something wrong with you.
