MONTROSE – Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, a Colorado-owned independent grocery chain with a focus on making natural and organic products affordable, opened its sixth Western Colorado location on August 9 in Montrose with specials all week followed by a Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, August 15. A free barbecue will take place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., including refreshments, giveaways, samples and prizes.

The employees and staff of Natural Grocers, together with their Colorado leadership, made the decision to donate 5 percent of all sales on August 11 to the Officer David J. Kinterknecht Benefit fund.

“While we are very excited to be bringing Natural Grocers to Montrose, we are community members first – and our thoughts have been of course on the tragedy that has touched us all in recent weeks,” said Alyssa Murray, Natural Grocers’ Montrose Store Manager. “Our home office made the offer, and we wanted to contribute in whatever way we could.”

The August 15 Grand Opening will begin at 8 a.m., with giveaways and raffle prizes including a $500 shopping gift card to Natural Grocers, a George Foreman Grill, GPS systems, Grind & Brew Automatic Coffee Maker, iPod and more. Free chair massages, and health, beauty and nutrition and vitamin consultations will also be available. There will also be delicious foods to taste and numerous samples of supplements and body care products.

“We are glad to open another Natural Grocers in Colorado and to bring Montrose its own store,” said Kemper Isely, Co-President of Natural Grocers. “We’re not competing directly with some of the other chains because we sell exclusively natural and organic products, but always at an affordable price."

Natural Grocers currently has 15 new local employees and expects to add about 35 more in its 12,000 square foot Montrose store. The Colorado-based chain currently has 34 stores throughout Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico, with more stores to open in the near future.

The Montrose store is located at 3400 S. Rio Grande Ave. and can be reached at 249-2724. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 8:04 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 7:03 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. – 6:06 p.m. The store will offer only organic produce, as well as natural and organic grocery products, free nutrition and vitamin and supplement consultations from trained nutritional coaches, and one of the world’s largest selections of vitamins and supplements; as well as high quality bulk foods, home care, beauty, body care, books, pet and other products aimed at helping consumers live a healthy lifestyle at affordable prices.

The Montrose store is also plastic-bag free. They do offer recycled boxes for shoppers’ convenience, as well as several choices of recyclable cloth bags at a very low cost. Be sure to bring your own bag, or pick up a free reusable one at the store, available with any purchase until until Sept. 26.

“We’re excited about becoming part of the Montrose community and getting to know our customers,” said Murray, “For healthy living, we are really a one-stop shopping experience.”
