OURAY – The popular regional bluegrass band, Sweet Sunny South, will perform at the Ouray’s Wright Opera House Friday, Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. The event will be the final fundraising concert of the summer season for the historic opera house.

Familiar to many, Sweet Sunny South audiences always expect a highly entertaining stage show featuring rollicking fiddle tunes, soulful ballads, tight vocal harmonies and an exceptional array of original songs combined with a heavy dose of humor that keeps the crowd smiling. Based in Paonia, the band has been making a name for itself at festivals and theaters throughout the region for the past eight years and has received invitations to perform as an official showcase band for several folk festivals. The group was also featured as one of Colorado’s "Movers and Shakers" in Denver's Westword magazine in 2007 and were selected the winners of the New Belgium Brewery's "What's your Folly?" contest after writing a jingle for the brewery.

The band has recorded four unique and entertaining CDs which are receiving heavy airplay across the country. Sweet Sunny South represents the traditional music of greats such as The Stanley Brothers and The Carter Family at the same time drawing influences from more contemporary bands such as The Freighthoppers, The Wilders and The Reeltime Travelers.

The Sweet Sunny South concert kicks off a weekend of entertainment of the Old West in Ouray County. It will be followed on Saturday by “Legendary Ladies of the West” at the Opera House, the major fund raising event for the Ouray County Historical Society. The program will follow an optional reception at Venue Roscoe Fox and a dinner at the historic Beaumont Hotel. (Info: Ouray County Historical Society/Museum 325-4576)

On Sunday, a free 4 p.m. Concert in the Park in Ridgway sponsored by the Ouray County Performing Arts Guild, will feature bluegrass and country music by Dallas Divide Band. (Info: Ouray County Performing Arts Guild, 970-626-2970 or 325-4598)

The “Campaign to Save the Opera House – It’s the Wright Thing To Do” has reached $120,000, according to Friends of the Wright Opera House President Ralph Huesing. Huesing reports that donations are coming in almost daily as the September deadline nears for their $200,000 goal for phase one of the project, allowing them to purchase the building. Future phases include adding an elevator, lighting and sound for performances, and creating a county-wide arts center. FWOH is in ongoing discussions with several Colorado foundations who have indicated they will provide grant funding once they have shown wide community support for the project.

Advance tickets for Sweet Sunny South are available in Ridgway at Cimarron Books & Coffee; in Ouray at Buckskin Booksellers, Khristopher’s Culinaire, and Mouse’s Chocolate; and in Montrose at Ouray Silversmith on Main Street. A cash bar for beer and wine will be available at the concert. Attendees are asked to bring a donation to the Ouray County Food Bank.

Contributions to Save the Wright can be sent to FWOH, PO Box 17, Ouray, 81427. Donations are eligible for IRS charitable contributions deductions plus a 25 percent tax credit for State of Colorado income tax.
