TELLURIDE – Although John Horn and Joel Kirkhoff earned the distinction of winning the Strokes of Genius Golf Tournament last weekend, the biggest winners of the tournament are local high school seniors with the dream of going to college.

Thanks to a successful Saturday night Calcutta, the Strokes of Genius netted over $37,000 to directly fund college scholarships for graduating seniors from Telluride High School. A small portion of the proceeds also fund the Strokes of Junior Golf Program, which enables children 10 to 16 years old to receive complimentary golf instruction and playing time at the Telluride Golf Club, from July through October.

“The tournament was a huge success and we were very pleased with the amount of money we raised for the kids,” said Sally Puff Courtney, Strokes of Genius Committee Member. “Even in this extremely challenging economic climate, we were able to raise $12,000 more than last year. We owe it all to the generous participants who support such a worthwhile cause.”

Fifty-six golfers took to the greens. Horn and Kirkhoff teamed up to win the tournament. Dan Rosenbaum and Abby Salter won the longest drive, and Gordon Stuart and Libba Anderson won closest to the pin.

Formerly known as the Benchmark Invitational Golf Tournament, Strokes of Genius was established by Benchmark Partners, a generous group of individuals who identified the need for a college scholarship fund for Telluride High School students. This year, Strokes of Genius awarded each of the following students a $5,000 scholarship for college: Josh Zieve, attending Northwestern University; Maddie Crowell, attending University of British Columbia; Jacqueline Distefano, attending College of the Holy Cross; Hannah Smith, attending University of Colorado; and Tarja Berry, also attending University of Colorado. Since its inception 16 years ago, Strokes of Genius has distributed nearly $200,000 to fund partial college scholarships for 56 Telluride High School graduates.

The 17th Annual Strokes of Genius Tournament will be held on the Telluride Golf Course July 30-Aug. 1, 2010. For more information, call 728-8717.
