Originating from various Middle Eastern Cultures, this beautiful, mystical dance corresponds to the natural cycles and rhythms within humans. The dance is a celebration of life. We dance to become one with a rhythm that was here before us and will remain after we are gone.
Created by women for women the dance has many health benefits. Every body shape is a gift with an intended destiny and it's about loving the body you have. Men and children can benefit as well.
The dance is characterized by undulating movements of the abdomen and hips and by graceful arm movements. Isolations are the beginning of all the movements and all movements are born from our center – the navel in our belly. There are many folk and classical styles. The American style is a progressive fusion of various movements from the different Middle Eastern Cultures along with new creative movements we learn from each other.
Taught by West, the “Zahra of the San Juans”, these classes are not only promising to be a great deal of fun, but also promise to be of the highest quality.
“I have danced most all of my life and my study includes the following: Modern, Jazz, and African movement at the Cleo Parker Robinson Theatre School of Dance in Denver, Colo., Ballet in Telluride, Colo. with Leslie Crane, Shirley Fortenberry and Valerie Madonna., Belly Dance in Grand Junction, Colo. with Mary Krasnow of Khubsurat and Ellen Rehwoldt of Sultans Pride. I have studied at many belly dance workshops with Delilah, Mesmera, Sahra, Suzanna Del Vecchio, Tina Sargent, Momo Kadous and Saroya, Eva Cernik, Artemis Mourat, Morroco and Tarik adb el Malik, Fat Chance Belly Dance, and more,” said West.
She has taught at the Telluride Dance Academy, at the Windham Peaks Spa in the Mountain Village and workshops at the Sherbino in Ridgway. She is currently teaching at the Telluride Yoga Center and at the Peak Fitness Studio in Norwood.
She has several beautiful choreographies to share and many choreographies yet to create. She will teach the basic movements and will introduce the intricate layers when students are ready to embellish their moves. Many of my dances include the beautiful colorful veils. All of Marsha's classes will begin with warm up stretches and focus on the center. Students will learn the basic isolations and combinations to prepare for the dances. Classes will end with a relaxation stretch of gratitude.
Belly Dancing for ages 8-15 will run on Thursdays from June 18 to July 9 from 4:30- 6 p.m. Belly Dancing for adults (ages 16 and up) will run the same days but from 7-8:30 p.m.
