According to San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters, Trenten Tyler Sutherland, 28, was shot and killed while hunting with two other friends on his property near Egnar. Masters said at about 11 p.m. Sutherland and the two other men were walking and looking for coyotes when a "mistake" occurred.
He said there was "something" that was misidentified as a coyote and Sutherland was "accidentally shot and killed." "All indications are that this is tragic accidental shooting," Masters said.
The San Miguel Sheriff's Office and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation were on location today mapping the scene and looking for a spent shell casing.
Findings from today's investigation will be transferred to the Colorado Seventh Judicial District Attorney's office in Montrose for further review.
Masters said neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to have factors in the shooting. Egnar – “range” spelled backwards – is a small, unincorporated town in southwestern San Miguel County near the Utah border.
