On behalf of the Moab community, the Moab Free Health Clinic would like to extend its thanks to the Telluride AIDS Benefit and the Telluride community for underwriting the cost of Rapid HIV and STD testing in Moab. The MFHC initiated HIV/STD testing in response to the lack of affordable and accessible testing options in Southeastern Utah and is now able to offer weekly testing clinics. Through funding from the Telluride AIDS Benefit, we can now offer these tests to anyone for free in an effort to keep our community informed and healthy. This partnership alleviates one of the most significant barriers to receiving health care: cost.

The Moab Free Health Clinic was established in 2008 in direct response to the community’s need for health care for the uninsured and underinsured in our region. Through invaluable financial and volunteer support, we are able to continually expand our preventive and educational services targeted at everyone. Before MFHC staff and volunteers received training to offer HIV counseling and testing, we had to deliver the disappointing news that Moab did not offer low-cost rapid testing and the closest options were hours away. Through training by the Utah Department of Health this past summer and now with financial support from the Telluride AIDS benefit, the Moab Free Health Clinic is able to join in the global effort to fight HIV, a devastating and indiscriminate disease, as well as other debilitating sexually transmitted diseases.

This public health partnership between Moab and Telluride would not be possible without the efforts by Moab PRIDE in connecting the need with the solution. With this recent TAB grant, the MFHC is able to offer free HIV/STD testing at the upcoming Moab PRIDE festival on September 28 to encourage health education and prevention in conjunction with the festival’s efforts to promote awareness, acceptance, and celebration of diversity for everyone. It is truly an honor for Moab to know that its friends and neighbors here and in San Miguel County are willing to support the health of our community. Thank you!
