TELLURIDE – The San Miguel County Commissioners offered unanimous support Wednesday to name a peak outside of Telluride “Bridal Peak.”

Jeff Burch, a Delta resident, is spearheading an effort to give name the unnamed 13,510-foot peak located between Lewis Lake and Blue Lake. The peak was referred to as Bridal Peak on a 1955 United States Geological Survey map, but is unnamed on current maps.

Burch asked the commissioners to write a letter to the USGS asking support for his campaign, which is part of his mission to complete his book, The Peaks of Telluride.

Lifelong Telluride resident and the Telluride Ski Resort’s first employee Bill “Senior” Mahoney first told Burch about the unnamed peak. Mahoney, who attended the meeting, said the mountain was vital to the area, and an important landmark.

Burch later told The Watch that the San Juan County Commissioners also agreed to contact the USGS in support of the effort to rename the peak. He added he would soon meet with the Telluride Town Council seeking their support.
