OURAY – At a special meeting on Monday, June 10, the Ouray School Board offered a new contract for the coming school year to kindergarten teacher Rebecca “MonkE” Hazen.
The contract takes into account certain benchmarks that Hazen must reach in order to complete her alternative teacher licensure process by the end of the 2013-14 school year.
The decision to offer Hazen a new contract was unanimous, said Ouray School Superintendent Scott Pankow. Hazen now has 30 days to sign the contract; the board advised her to have a lawyer look it over.
“To me, it looks great and wonderful,” Hazen said on Tuesday. “I am very appreciative of all the time and effort the board has given to this. It has been phenomenal.”
Hazen’s future at the school was uncertain as students were released for summer vacation in late May. Pankow had recommended that her position not be renewed, due to concern over how she was progressing with her alternative teacher’s licensure program.
The school board has deliberated on the matter of whether to retain Hazen ever since. Discussion has taken place at two lengthy executive sessions and two special meetings held in open session. Hazen’s previous contract was non-renewed at a board meeting on June 1.
Hazen was hired at Ouray School under an emergency provision in September 2010 to fill a last-minute teaching position. Since then, she has embarked on a two-year program to become certified through the state’s Alternative Teacher’s Licensure program.
