OURAY – Local live theater in Ouray is becoming a reality as the Wright Opera House project evolves, with a much fuller schedule planned this year including visiting troupes and energized local players.

The Ouray County Players will stage The Devious Dentist or There's Gold in Them Thar Teeth each Monday in July, directed by Alyssa Preston. A female rendition of The Odd Couple directed by Nancy Nixon will be presented by WISE on Aug. 2 and 3 during the Alpine Artists' Summer Art Show.

Visiting troupes will include the traveling Summer Theater Program from Colorado Mesa University for two weekends of different performances in repertory including the comedy,  The Complete History of America - Abridged and the musical Boyz. The Kansas City Players, a professional acting troupe, will stage the Broadway play, Art for three performances Oct. 11-13.

The Wright Opera House stage is set and ready to host these live theatrical performances, says Dee Williams, chair of the Friends of the Wright.

"Generous donors have provided the equipment needed to now manage a fairly full and varied array of theater events to be mixed in with the concert schedule,” Williams says. “It will not be perfect until we can finish the longer-range upgrades to the auditorium and backstage facilities, but for smaller productions, the current facility can provide the theater experiences we know the community has been hoping we would be able to provide. From a regular Summer Melodrama to Dickens' A Christmas Carol,  theatrical groups will be welcomed to the stage of the Wright Opera House through the rest of 2013."

For Halloween season, the Rocky Horror Picture Show will return on Oct. 26.  A Christmas Carol as adapted for a live radio show by Mike Hockersmith and Nancy Ziglar will be brought back by the Ouray County Players for the traditional holiday season kick-off on Dec. 6 and 7.

Though not yet scheduled, the Timshel Theater Company is also expected to return for at least one of their thought-provoking plays during 2013.

Tickets for all performances at the Wright Opera House can be purchased online with no service fee at TheWrightOperaHouse.org where a complete schedule of events is available. Tickets are also available at the Box Office in the lobby of the Wright. For information or to order tickets by phone, call 970/325-4399.
