For over a decade the sonic chemist Matt Butler has been the revered brainchild behind one of the more experimental music projects on the touring circuit. Inspired by a multi-national open mic night in India, The Everyone Orchestra has become the apex of the improvisational music journey by combining choice members from top tier bands on stage. Musicians from all walks of music are hand picked and thrown together with formal rehearsal is being limited or nonexistent. With no real clear blueprint of where the music might take them, the rotating cast of participants must rely on their skills and ability to tap into a unified sound in real time. To date hundreds of musicians, singers, dancers, and guest conductors from bands like the Grateful Dead, Phish, the String Cheese Incident, and many more have contributed to the legacy, and now for the first time ever Butler will conduct the act in Gunnison.
For this rendition of the project the bluegrass elite Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth and Anders Beck of Greensky Bluegrass will be accompanied by Dave Watts and Jans Ingber of the nu-funk outfit The Motet. Guitar prodigy Steve Kimock and famed bassist Kai Eckhardt of Garaj Mahal are also on board for this trip to Western Colorado. The unlikely pairing will showcase the adaptability of The Everyone Orchestra’s unique affinity for combining conflicting genres with ease. With Butler leading the band through movements that walk to the edge of genius, the audience’s energy and encouragement of the performers ultimately dictates the success of the sonic odyssey. Catch this incredible once in a lifetime lineup of Colorado favorites at The Last Chance in Gunnison on Friday.
