Big Head Todd, Lucinda Williams, Ben Harper, Los Lobos and More Bring Rockin’ Sounds to KOTO’s The Ride Festival

TELLURIDE – A rock and roll festival comes to Telluride Town Park, organized by KOTO Community Radio. Dubbed The Ride Festival, it brings a weekend full of diverse musical sounds, with, yes, a whole lot shakin’ goin’ on.

Headlining the festival is Big Head Todd and the Monsters, fresh from the studio with new music and R&B sounds, playing two sets, Saturday Aug. 25 and  and Sunday, Aug. 26.

The weekend’s lineup also includes performances from Lucinda Williams, Ben Harper, Los Lobos, The Wood Brothers, JJ Grey & Mofro, the North Mississippi Allstars, Matthew Curry & The Fury, David Lindley, Jeffrey Foucault, Nathaniel Rateliff, The Lumineers, James McMurtry and more.

“Since we already have a bluegrass festival and a blues festival, we thought it would be great to bring a rock and roll festival to Telluride,” says promoter Todd Creel. “Phish was very well- received, and so we felt like the town could use a rock festival.”

KOTO Board president and longtime KOTO DJ Creel said the festival got its start after  conversations with various town officials, including Telluride Mayor Stu Fraser, about how  to keep people in Telluride after the Pro Cycling Challenged passed through Telluride on Monday, Aug. 21.

“I’ve been wanting to see more live music in Town Park for awhile, and we looked into doing a concert and it just evolved into a festival because all of these great bands were available,” Creel says. “So here we have a two-day rock event.”

Performances on the Telluride Town Park run from 12-10:45 p.m. Saturday, and 11:15 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday.

“We are trying to bring in some names people know, and others who are on the rise,” Creel says. “Ben Harper, Lucinda and Big Head Todd all have a great following. I’m really excited to see The Lumineers and the Wood Brothers. I want to be a rock-based event with established acts mixed with newer talent.”

And if the musical lineup slated for the town park stage isn’t enough to satisfy need for rock and roll, Creel says there are plenty of opportunities to catch great live music after hours as well. The Sheridan Opera House hosts three late-night shows, starting with Big Head Todd and the Monsters Friday, the North Mississippi Allstars Saturday, and David Lindley on Sunday night. Live music is planned at for downstairs at Honga’s Lotus Petal.

Weekend passes are available for $87.50; and single day passes are $55. For a full lineup, see The Watch’s Ride Festival section or visit ridefestival.com.
