MOUNTAIN VILLAGE – The newly expanded 18-hole Double Cabin Disc Golf Course – a summer recreational gem of Mountain Village – is hosting the first annual Telluride Mountain Disc Golf Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17 and 18.

The weekend’s chain-clanking fun will begin on Friday with practice rounds being held all day and a random doubles practice round beginning at 3:30 p.m. Registration/check-in for the tournament will also be held on Friday from 3:30-7:30 p.m. at the course.

Competition in various professional and amateur divisions will begin on Saturday with two 18-hole rounds taking place. Tee-off for the first round is at 9 a.m. with the second round beginning at 2 p.m. This event will be a C tier Professional Disc Golf Association sanctioned event that will end with an awards party at Poachers Pub.

“Obviously being up in Telluride and getting up on the mountain where the views are amazing will be great,” Event Director and PDGA state coordinator John Bird said, from his home in Longmont, Colo., “especially for those of us traveling up from the flatlands. Also, when you go up in elevation the flight characteristics of discs change. You can throw a long ways up there, especially if you have a downhill throw.”

Bird went on to say this isn’t the first time Mountain Village’s Double Cabin course has hosted a PDGA tournament, but this will be the first time a tournament will be held on the newly expanded course.

While Mountain Village has been home to a nine-hole disc golf course for several years now, the Town of Mountain Village recently completed an additional nine holes on July 1. Now, the Double Cabin Disc Golf course boasts a full 18-holes in the high alpine environment, and scenery that’s unique to Mountain Village.

“I am really psyched for this weekend,” Mountain Village Recreation Department Director Tony Forrest said. “There are all kinds of stuff going on and this tournament is just another event people can take advantage of. This will kind of be a grand opening for the disc course and hopefully it will let a lot of people know what’s going on up there. It’s really great, and there are tons of people out there playing it.”

Over the past month or so, Forrest said he’s noticed the course isn’t only used by locals. He said a lot of families who spend the summer in Mountain Village are using the course as well.

“It’s been a cool dynamic to watch,” he said. “There’s a diverse group of people out there pounding it every afternoon at three o’clock. The feedback we’ve received so far is that people are really grateful for it.”

As for the tournament, Bird said the Mile High Disc Golf Club is handling registration for the event while a number of local businesses are sponsoring the tournament as well.

“There are quite a few different divisions you can play in, and the entry fee depends on the division,” Bird said. “There will be an assortment of prizes from discs and stuff from local establishments and business.”

The first 50 players to register for the tournament are guaranteed a player’s package. The tournament is sponsored by the Town of Mountain Village, Telluride Alpine Lodging, Bootdoctors, Poachers Pub, and Diggity Dog.

The Double Cabin Disc Golf Course is located across Mountain Village Boulevard from the Mountain Village Town Hall.
