As a 29 year resident and as a San Miguel County Commissioner candidate, I believe that a government should do for it’s constituents what the constituents cannot do for themselves. It is not the function of government to create unnecessary restrictions on the ability of homeowners to make ends meet in a tough economy. At the last meeting, the County Commissioners took public commentary on a proposal to deny homeowners the right to rent their homes for less than 30 days. Several in attendance, including myself, voiced the opinion that restrictions on renting are best developed and enforced by individual homeowner associations. In this way neighbors, keenly aware of their own mutual needs, can decide what regulations are appropriate.
It seems fair for the County to facilitate in the collection of legally mandated taxes. The collection of this small percentage of sales and lodging taxes not only levels the playing field for struggling lodging companies, it collects much needed revenue for our financially challenged county. Like most in attendance at the meeting, I support the collection of a small amount of tax. But I strongly oppose any attempt to place a heavy penalty on all homeowners for the inconsiderate behavior of a few.
If you have an opinion on this important matter, it would serve you well to contact the Commissioners before this decision is final.
Sincerely,
- Dan Chancellor, District 3 Candidate for San Miguel County Commissioner
