Montrose Will Host Seven Teams From the Midwest July 18-22

MONTROSE
– State championship baseball teams from around the Midwest, with players ages 16-18, will descend on Montrose for the Babe Ruth Midwest Plains Regional Tournament, hosted by Montrose Indians Baseball.

Seven teams from Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, and Colorado (including the Montrose Indians summer team) will go head-to-head in a double-elimination tournament held at the Montrose High School Baseball Field, July 18-22. All are vying for a chance to play at the Babe Ruth World Series held in Texas at the end of the month.

Montrose Indians Head Coach Landon Wareham says he expects the tournament to bring up to 300 players, parents and fans from around the Midwest, bringing not only great baseball to the region, but a positive economic boon to Montrose.

“It’s been a long time since Montrose has hosted a tournament like this,” Wareham says. “This will be an event for the entire community. With 300 or so people following their team here, it will do nothing but help the community.”

Wareham said Montrose hosted a previous Babe Ruth tournament and the organization “really liked the field,” so they approached the Montrose Indians about hosting this year’s Midwest Plains Regional Tournament.

“When you win a host bid, you get to enter a team into the tournament,” he explains. “We will have our 18-and-under summer team playing. It’s going to be really fun.”

Players, coaches, officials, and their family members are expected to arrive in Montrose on July 15 and 16. Mandatory tournament check in takes place Tuesday, July 17, after which Montrose will host a picnic for all guests, local host families, tournament volunteers and sponsors. The first game will kick off the tournament on Wednesday, July 18, at 10 a.m.

Wareham says organizers of the tournament still need local volunteers to serve as host families for visiting athletes. This includes providing housing, meals, shuttling guest players to the fields, and showing them the area. Those interested in becoming a host family should contact coordinator Shawna Lopez at shawnalopez@gmail.com or 970/901-0055.

Home Loan Insurance has signed on to help sponsor the event and Affordable Inns is the official host hotel for the coaches and Babe Ruth officials. Businesses or individuals interested in being a sponsor, advertising in the tournament program, or volunteering should contact Tournament Director Tom Shearer at tomshearer@skybeam.com or 970/596-2322.

“I can’t say enough about how proud we are to represent Montrose in this tournament,” Wareham says. “We are hoping the community will support us, not just the boys by attending the games or helping sponsor the event, but by rolling out the best of Montrose hospitality from the community as a whole. We would like to see the hotels, restaurants, recreation facilities and more, get on board to welcome these families and make Montrose a place where they will want to come back and vacation.”

Admission to the entire tournament (up to 14-15 games) is $25 for adults and $20 for kids ages 11-18 and seniors ages 60 and over. Daily admission (up to four games per day) is $10 for adults and $8 a day for kids and seniors. Children 10 and under are free.
