RIDGWAY – Runners converged On Ridgway for the inaugural Trail Town 10-Miler race on Saturday, June 16.
The course started and finished on Palomino Drive in Ridgway’s Trail Town, taking in a scenic lollipop-shaped loop along county roads in the Cow Creek and Owl Creek vicinity. The race attracted 38 competitors ranging in age from 14-75.
“Although it was a small field, a good time was had by all,” race coordinator John Ferguson said. “It was a nice small-town event.”
The top two women finishers, Tracy Colliander and Lanny Barnes, are 30-year-old identical twins from Durango. They are both on the USA Olympic Biathlon team, and finished in a virtual tie. They set a smoking pace, coming in at 1:11:22 and 1:11:23, respectively.
Top male finishers were 20-year-old Luke Wempe, who finished in 1:10:52, and Terry Daley, 51, who came in second place overall with a time of 1:11:02. The youngest runner to complete the course, 14-year-old Wesley Twiggs, came in at 1:33:59.
The Trail Town Distillery, which sponsored the race, provided unique awards: shot glasses, vodka, ginger ale, T-shirts and visors.
The Trail Town 10-Miler was the second installment of a six-part running event called the Ouray County Race Series which strings together a couple of well-established foot races along with some new ones, to offer a varied menu of running events in Ouray County from May through October.
There are still four races to go in the series:
• July’s event is the Ourayce, a 10-K fun-run that has taken place in Ouray every Fourth of July since the early 1980s, and a fundraiser for KURA, Ouray’s student-run public radio station.
• On August 11, it’s the Mt. Sneffels Marathon/ Half Marathon (mtsneffelsmarathon.com), a popular annual fundraiser for the Mt. Sneffels Education Foundation.
• The Ouray Mountain Trail Run (ouraytrailrun.org) is front and center on Sept. 29. This 14-mile endurance trail race circumnavigating Ouray is the only true trail run of the series.
• The race series wraps up on Oct. 27 in Ridgway with the second annual Rhythm Run 10K/5K. This race is hosted by Ridgway High School music department.
