MOUNTAIN VILLAGE – An outdoor market on Heritage Plaza in Mountain Village opens for the season next week, on Wednesday, June 20, back for its second year.

Also next Wednesday, the Mountain Village Center will see the start of its fifth annual Bouldering Competition Series.

Along with a new name, “Market on the Plaza,” the market this year will boast almost twice the number of vendors it had last year. They will be selling everything from produce, dairy and prepared foods to leather goods, arts and candies, spices and jewelry.

The market will be open June 20; July 3, 11, 18, 25; August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; and September 1 and 13 in conjunction with the town’s FirstGrass and Sunset Blues Concerts in June and September; the Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association’s Red, White and Blues Celebration and Sunset Concert Series; and Telluride Film Festival weekend.

Market hours are from 12:30 to 6 p.m.

One of the new participants in the market will be Wilkinson Public Library, whose cooking demonstration series Books and Cooks will occupy the Heritage Plaza main stage. The first chef scheduled to showcase her skills on July 3 is Lisa Dahl, the executive chef and owner of two five-star restaurants in Sedona and Scottsdale, and author of The Elixir of Life: Finding Love and Joy in the Passionate Pursuit of Food.

The library’s children’s department will bring three episodes of story time to the market June 20, July 18 and August 15 at 2 p.m. each day; and will schedule several musicians to play at the market, including cowboy poet and singer Kerry Grombacher July 11, and a poetry reading July 3 with Laurie Wagner Buyer and W.C. Jameson.

Finally, the library will host a “help desk” booth all summer long where patrons will be able to receive staff assistance, such as applying for or renewing one’s library card, answering technical questions regarding iPhones, iPads, laptops and more.

While the season’s first market is taking place in Heritage Plaza on June 20, the first bouldering competition will get underway at 4 p.m. in the adjoining Conference Center Plaza.

The Competition Series will continue throughout the summer months – June 20, July 11, August 1, and August 22, with separate men’s and women’s divisions and a division for children, with prizes awarded to first, second and third place winners.

Novice and expert climbers are encouraged to register the day of the event, and competitors will be allowed to climb as many problems as they can in the two-hour period.

The town’s Adventure Rock, which is otherwise open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. will be closed on competition days.
