MONTROSE – A contest offering amateur songwriters a chance to perform at this summer’s first Montrose Troubadour Contest during Main in Motion's opening evening on June 7 is now accepting applications.

The solo contest is open to singer/songwriters ages 17 and older, and the top three contestants will win prizes, including a performance spot at the Montrose Music Festival on July 14.

Contestants must upload a video of themselves performing an original song they wrote to YouTube and submit a link to their video to maininmotion@gmail.com no later than Monday, June 5, at 5 p.m.

The event will give Main in Motion a “hometown feel” and give the community an opportunity for people to hear the local talent, MIM board member Krista Montalvo said. “But in a different way than all the music we typically hear at Main In Motion or at our local venues. It's more organic,” she added.

Montalvo said that though there has been interest in the contest, she has yet to receive any YouTube submission links as of May 28. She hopes that people will enter, as first place will win $200 in Montrose Bucks, second place wins $100 Montrose Bucks and third place, $50 in Montrose Bucks.

Contestants are limited to five minutes and can use acoustic instruments with pickups, as well as EQ devices, but no effects, according to the official rules. Instruments must be able to be carried out to the microphone with the performer and a keyboard will be provided for contestants if needed. No backup musicians are allowed.

Montalvo said the YouTube submission allows the MIM board to screen the performances for any language or content that might not be family-friendly, as the contestants will be competing at the first MIM event between Bank of the West and Brown's Shoe Fit Company. The YouTube submission also allows the board to schedule the musicians according to how many are participating and the time restrains of the MIM event.

Participants will be notified of their time slot for the June 7 competition via email on June 6, she said.

The full contest rules can be found at www.maininmotion.com.
