Hundreds of designs were submitted from 23 different states, so the fact that a Montrose artist won and that Montrose will be hosting the start of Stage 2 of this year’s second annual event on Aug. 21 is a just a happy coincidence.
More than 4,000 fans voted in the online Facebook design contest, with final winners selected by judges.
Johnson and her husband Jordan Johnson operate Treefeather Creative, whose clients range from the Montrose Public Library to Horsefly Brewing. Leanna Johnson, who is 25, is a native a Montrose, and has a degree in graphic design from Colorado Mesa University.
Not incidentally, the Johnsons are cyclists themselves. Leanna’s parents owned Cascade Bicycles in downtown Montrose for years.
The 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge is expected to draw thousands of visitors to the region in late August. The race starts on Aug. 20 with Stage 1 beginning in Durango and finishing in Telluride. The racers will then start the second stage in Montrose on Aug. 21, finishing in Crested Butte.
Johnson’s winning commemorative poster will be produced and sold to race fans both online and onsite during the race.
