OLATHE – Lettuce, carrots, and radishes will soon be pushing up in the Olathe Elementary greenhouse. Fifth-grade students, curious about how the drip system works and how best to angle a shovel, worked with Valley Food Partners last week to prepare raised beds for this summer’s crops. Vegetables, herbs, and flowers will be grown from seed donated by San Juan Gardens. Teacher Paul Althaus praised school cooks for doing “a great job” of incorporating the student grown veggies into school lunch menus last year.
The greenhouse is the brainchild of Kerry Mattics, of Mattics Orchards, who donated many hours to constructing it and sharing his knowledge of plants for the greenhouse, which offers “a living laboratory for everything from science experiments to math problems.”
The Valley Food Parnership’s Carol Parker said, “This is a great example of the community collaborating to make learning more relevant through a “hands-on” project that also helps to establish lifelong eating habits that includes more fresh vegetables.”
