The MuniRevs software enables businesses to submit taxes, from sales to restaurant, lodging and other excise taxes, online.
“We’ve been thinking about self-collecting our sales taxes for years, because there are so many benefits,” said Mountain Village Finance Director Kevin Swain. “But we would not have made the decision to do so without MuniRevs, which allowed us to finally have an automated system that can track revenues more efficiently and do so without adding staff.”
Erin Neer, Swain’s predecessor in the job, developed MuniRevs. After working in the municipal finance arena for over 10 years, Neer said, she saw a need for more efficient revenue collection. “As we continued to develop vacation rental auditing and other revenue enhancement services for municipalities, we realized that there was a huge gap in improving the efficiency of tax collection for local governments,” she said. “For many municipalities, transactional taxes are a significant revenue stream and our web-based software offers them the ability to manage them more closely and ensure they are capturing every dollar.”
So far, Swain is delighted with the results. “With this system, we estimated a 1 percent, or $24,000, revenue growth. We achieved that result in the first month from licensing revenue increases, and anticipate further growth in taxes as well as the year progresses.”
Telluride Tourism Board President and CEO Michael Martelon praised the new software as well.
“Traditional economic impact analysis is based upon certain assumptions and formulas by the travel industry,” said Martelon.
“With MuniRevs, we have an opportunity to blow that out of the water and calculate the real economic impact of the festivals, holiday weekends and baseline numbers for our community. Marketing is art and science, without the data the art is aimless. Having this data will allow the Telluride destination to market more efficiently and effectively.”
