At its Jan. 14 meeting, the Norwood Town Board heard from Wright’s Mesa resident Lory Herndon, who asked if the town would be willing to donate a parcel of land to be used as a community garden. The board was very interested in the idea and agreed to look for an appropriate location for the project.
The garden would be largely run by young people, such as Prime Time’s BASE Camp students, as well as by members of the Norwood Garden Club and other volunteers. It has been proposed that the harvest be given back to the community to be used in the senior citizen lunch program, at Prime Time Early Learning Center, or similar areas of need. Once some land is acquired, volunteers will be needed to help prepare the beds, put up fences, plant seeds, etc. The community garden group hopes to organize a good base of people who are willing to work with people young and old. County Offers Free Prescription Discount Card
San Miguel County and the National Association of Counties are offering free discount prescription drug cards to county residents. The card provides an average 20 percent discount on drugs purchased at participating pharmacies. The prescription discount can be used any time your prescription is not covered by insurance. There are no restrictions on use, no associated fees and no limits to how many times it can be used. Prescription claims through the program are not eligible for reimbursement through the state Medicaid program, however.

CSU Extension Offers Seedling Tree Program
The Colorado University Extension is offering a free Informational Seedling Tree Program with CSU Extension Director Yvette Henson and CSU Forester Casey Harrison, Tuesday, Jan. 27, 6:30 p.m. at the Community Building in Naturita. Henson and Harrison will discuss tree selection, planning, planting and care of seedling shrubs and trees. Refreshments will be served. Seedling tree order forms and tree supply catalogs also will be available.
The CSU Extension Office, Norwood and CSU Forest Service are selling seedling trees and shrubs grown at the Colorado State Nursery in Ft. Collins. The program’s aim is for people to plant trees for conservation purposes such as wind barriers, erosion control, to create wildfire defensible landscapes, and for wildlife habitat and reforestation. To be eligible to purchase the plants, you must own at least two acres of land in San Miguel or West Montrose Counties. Supplies are limited; contact the extension office to order no later than April 10. The trees will be delivered to the San Miguel County Fairgrounds garage (across the street from the Extension Office) around the first week of May.

New Norwood Writers Guild to Meet Feb. 2
The newly formed Norwood Writers Guild has joined forces with Talking Gourds to host a monthly reading series for poets and writers living in the lower San Miguel Basin. The group will meet the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at Two Candles Coffeehouse in Norwood. Open both writers and readers of every age, participants are encouraged to bring a short piece to read, whether it’s a self-written piece or one from your favorite author. Wilderness First Aid Class Offered in Norwood
Norwood’s First Lead is conducting a Wilderness First Responder training, Saturday, Feb. 14-Sunday, Feb. 22. Anyone who travels in the backcountry will benefit from taking the nine-day intensive. “You owe it to yourself and to those you care for to be well-trained and competent when you are far from help,” says instructor Peter Muckerman.

The next Gunnision Sage-Grouse Working Group meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 27, 10 a.m. at the forest Service office in Norwood. Most of the meeting time will be spent going over the draft plan. Bring a lunch; the working group will provide snacks and drinks. Those who cannot attend the meeting should email comments, edits and suggested changes to Leigh Roberston, working group coordinator, at LeighRobertson@netscape.com.
Prairie Dog Plan Comment Period Extended
The Colorado Division of Wildlife is extending the time period for submitting comments on the Colorado Gunnison's and White-tailed Prairie Dog Conservation Plan. Comments from the public will be accepted through Feb. 15.
The conservation plan, when final, will be used as a guide to maintain these two species on native range in Colorado. The plan can be viewed on the Colorado Division of Wildlife website at: , the link can be found under "Things to Know" on the home page.
The Gunnison's prairie dog is found mainly in southwest Colorado, the San Luis Valley and in South Park; the white-tailed prairie dog is found primarily in northwest Colorado but its range extends into the Uncompahgre Valley south of Montrose.
The goals of the conservation plan are to: Develop and implement conservation strategies that will work to prevent the need to list the two species under the Endangered Species Act; Promote conservation of not only the two species, but also their habitats and associated wildlife species; Implement conservation strategies to help mitigate negative impacts to the two species; Identify research needs that will help guide appropriate conservation of populations; Focus use of Colorado's existing regulatory mechanisms to maintain species viability; and Increase stakeholder and other agencies' participation in prairie dog conservation.
