Beginning at 7 p.m. on March 6, Democrats statewide will meet at their respective caucus locations where they will organize their local party to participate in the road to the November election.
“At these caucuses, we will elect delegates to the county assembly, elect co-chairs for each precinct, discuss candidates for various offices, and recommend resolutions for the party platform,” says John Hollrah, chair of the Ouray County Democrats.
For anyone to participate in Tuesday’s caucuses, he or she must have been a resident in his or her precinct for at least 30 days and registered to vote in the precinct for at least 29 days. Anyone who turned 18 or who became a naturalized citizen within a two-month period before the caucus is eligible. If a registered Democrat has become a resident of the county during the two months before the caucus, he or she can participate as well.
Anyone wishing to participate in county assemblies, the state assembly and the Democratic National Convention as a delegate must participate in their local precinct caucuses to do so.
“There are a lot of opportunities for people to go as delegates,” says Brian Ahern, chair of the San Miguel County Democratic Party. “If there is some issue people feel strongly about, bring it to the caucus in the form of a resolution.”
In San Miguel County, caucus locations for Precincts 1 and 2 will be held at the Telluride Fire Station, at the Placerville Fire Station for Precinct 3, at the West End Pizzeria in Norwood for Precincts 4 and 5, and at the Mountain Village Town Hall for Precinct 6.
In Ouray County caucus locations for Precincts 1 and 2 will be at the Ouray School, at the Ridgway Community Center for Precincts 3 and 4, and at Cimarron Books and Coffeehouse for Precinct 5.
For Montrose County Democrats, caucus locations for West End Precincts 5, 8, 10, 15, and 16 will be held at the Naturita Library. Precinct 11 in the Maher area will be held at the home of Sydney Shaw and Keith Nichols (78344 Black Bear Trail, Crawford). All other Montrose County Precincts caucuses will be held in the Montrose High School cafeteria (use Selig entrance and park in football field parking).
“There is a lot to fight for this year,” Ahern says. “Now more than ever there need to be people to shine a light of truth and that will be happening when people attend these caucuses and assemblies. I am excited about it. Now more than ever, I am proud to be a Democrat.”
