RIDGWAY – Aaron James “Spud” Ball, a 25-year-old and new resident of Ridgway, was found dead in his apartment on Monday, Jan. 16.

According to a press release from the Ridgway Marshal’s Office, on that day “an officer of the RMO responded to a request for a welfare check on a party in the Town of Ridgway. The officer entered the residence through an unlocked door and once inside observed a body lying on one of the bedroom floors. The party was non-responsive.

“The officer called for an ambulance. It was apparent to EMS personnel that the party had been on the floor for some time, and there were no signs of trauma to the victim. Assisting agencies that responded included a Ouray County Sheriff’s Deputy, Advanced Life Support personnel from Ouray EMS, the Ridgway Ambulance, the Ouray County Deputy Coroner, and another officer from the marshal’s office.”

Ball, who was from Nebraska, had arrived in Ridgway on Jan. 12, and moved into his apartment on Jan. 13. He and his father had apparently been coming to the Ridgway area to spend their vacations for several years.

According to Deputy Coroner Steve Lance, because the death was “unattended,” and Ball was otherwise young and healthy, an autopsy was ordered. “The autopsy was ‘unremarkable,’” Lance reported, and so authorities ordered a toxicology study. Lance doesn’t anticipate toxicology results “for at least 90 days.”

Ball is the son of James and Stephanie Ball of Plattsmouth, Neb. Burial took place at Grand View Cemetery in Montrose.
