National Guard Homecoming
MONTROSE – The public is invited to welcome home the officers and Soldiers of the 928th Area Medical Support Company of the Colorado Army National Guard Friday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m., at Friendship Hall, 1001 No. Second St., at the Montrose County Fairgrounds.
The unit, arriving home after a year of service in Afghanistan, arrives at Montrose Regional Airport that morning, and meets up with friends and loved ones for a belated Christmas ceremony at Friendship Hall. A parade will follow.
Saturday Is Ski Safety Day
TELLURIDE – The Telluride Ski Resort and the Telluride Medical Center host Safety Day on the Ski Resort, Saturday, Jan. 14, 11 a.m.-3:30p.m. The event features six on-mountain safety stations, with information about everything from hydration to helmets, sunscreen, stretching, safeguarding ACLs, and ski slope/terrain park safety. Montrose School District Holds Meetings Jan. 18
MONTROSE – Superintendent Mark MacHale and School Board President Dr. Kjersten Davis will host two back-to-back community meetings Wednesday, Jan. 18, covering four topics – budget, facilities, personnel and instruction – identified as significant by attendees at a November community forum.
“As I have come to know many of you and this community, I appreciate your past efforts and continuing commitment to making the schools in Montrose and Olathe great,” MacHale said. The meetings take place at the Educational Support Building, 930 Colorado Ave. Personnel: 6:30-7:30 p.m. – What does a teacher need to be successful in the classroom? Does a reading teacher/interventionist really make a difference? What training and support do our teachers need to meet the academic and cultural diversity of our students? Curriculum and Instruction: 7:45-8:45 p.m. – 21st Century Schools: What is the end goal? What can we do now and in the coming years to get our students' proficiency levels higher?
“I hope community members interested in excellent schools will consider attending one (or more) of these sessions,” Davis said. “They will be interactive and geared to engage participants' knowledge and wisdom. We need your input as we take our schools from good to great.”
Four-course Fundraiser for Southwest Institute Jan. 19
SAN MIGUEL COUNTY – The Southwest Institute for Resilience hosts a four-course meal, complete with edible auction items, music and dancing, on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Steaming Bean. Each meal ($60) comes with a complimentary drink – and a taste of mead (hence the name, Bee’s Knees).
The Southwest Institute for Resilience hosts community gardens in Telluride, Ridgway and Norwood, and the community greenhouse in Ophir; it also oversees the Telluride Farmers Market and the Tomten Community Farm. MMH Health Fair Scheduled for Saturday, February 25; Blood Draws in Several Locations
MONTROSE – The annual Montrose Memorial Hospital Health Fair takes place Saturday, Feb. 25, 6:30 a.m.-12 p.m., at the Montrose Pavilion.
Early Blood Draws, held in conjunction with the Health Fair, will take place Saturday, Jan. 28, in Ridgway, at the 4-H Events Center, 7-11 a.m.; Monday, Jan. 30, at the American Legion Hall in Olathe, 6:30-9:30 a.m.; and Wednesday, Feb. 1-Saturday, Feb. 4, 6:30-9:30 a.m., at the Montrose Pavilion Senior Center.
The total chemistry profile ($40) offered at the Health Fair evaluates kidney function, electrolytes, triglycerides, HDL and LDL cholesterol levels and over 15 components in the blood, and also includes iron, iron binding and TSH (Thyroid Screening). A PSA blood test for prostate cancer ($30) will be offered for men 40 and older, as will a Complete Blood Count test ($20), a Hemoglobin A1c ($35), and a Vitamin D screening ($40).

MONTROSE – Montrose County School District RE-1J wants to join school districts nationwide during School board Recognition Month in January to say “thank you.”

Preparedness for a disaster starts with a conversation that leads to a communication plan so that individuals and families develop evacuation plans and get emergency kits in order. A complete emergency kit in the home, car and workplace that’s good for three days will be a lifeline, should first responders be unable to reach you immediately after a disaster. Kits should be customized for special needs (prescriptions, phone numbers, food and documents) and updated annually.
