SAF/Telluride Theatre Present Barry
TELLURIDE – Barry Louis Polisar has been writing and recording music for children since 1975. One of those children lucky enough to grow up with his songs was Telluride Theatre’s own Sasha Cucciniello. After playing some of his music for Colin Sullivan, Colin secretly contacted Sasha’s childhood hero to see if he could get permission for her to write a play using Barry’s songs. Barry said yes.
Now the Sheridan Arts Foundation and Telluride Theatre have teamed up to present Barry, a show for children of all ages, featuring the songs of Barry Louis Polisar, at the Sheridan Opera House on Thursday, Dec. 9, Saturday, Dec. 11 and Sunday, Dec. 12, at 5:30 p.m. The show is free and open to the public, and families are welcome!
Using Polisar’s songs, Cucciniello wrote a musical, for children of all ages, featuring songs with titles like “My Brother Thinks He’s a Banana,” “I’ve Got a Dog and My Dog’s Name is Cat,” “Giggle Tickle Fiddle Little Wiggle Around,” “Homemade Band” and “My Brother Threw Up on my Stuffed Toy Bunny,” and more. The story follows a boy named Barry through an ordinary day – breakfast, lunch and dinner; school and recess; babysitter and library time – with a dancing dinosaur, a very shy boy named Hiram, show and tell, a dog named cat and a cast of characters who have to cooperate, imagine and try new things to make it all magical.
The cast includes Rachel Cooke, Patrick Dyar, Megan Heller, Colin Sullivan and Melissa Sumpter. During the rehearsal process the playwright and cast have been working closely with veteran theatre musicians Ethan Hale and Sam Burgess to bring Barry’s songs to life.
Barry, the inaugural production of the newly formed Telluride Theatre (thanks to the recent merger of the Telluride Repertory Theatre and SquidShow Theatre) and is a co-production with the Sheridan Arts Foundation.
