MONTROSE — The Ten Friends Arts and Crafts Show this Saturday at the Ute Indian Museum hasn’t changed that much since it was started by, you guessed it, ten friends about seven years ago, except for the addition of a couple of friends, and a level of artistry that has evolved as much as the artists themselves.
Group spokesperson Janice Reynolds said the annual show began with ten crafters and artisans who knew each other, and has expanded this year with the addition of photographer Justin Bowman and master knitter Cathy Langlois.
“We also have potter Chad Morris, who teaches pottery at Montrose High School,” Reynolds said.
Each artisan or crafter uses a different material. Offerings include metal art by Sven Krebs, woven baskets by Deidra Manary, dried and pressed floral art and aspen leave pins by Wendy Burell, woodcarvings by Janet Pompeo, jewelry by Tresa Jaskunas, and contemporary designs in silver and precious and semi-precious stones by Larry Munyon of East Mesa Silverworks.
Reynolds lays claim to the title “Bookmark Queen of Montrose” with her whimsical bookmarks, like one with a drawing of a cat atop a pile of books and the legend, “Books. Cats. Life is good” or “Coffee is my best friend.”
Rita Elliott will be showing and selling retro-style aprons, hand-sewn in vibrant colors and edged with lace and rickrack.
All the artist will be at their tables to sell their works, Reynolds said, as well as talk about their creations, like Krebs’ metal art.
“Sven Krebs is such a great recycler, and is offering small and large works of art,” Reynolds said. “He just finished the new gates for the Montrose Botanical Gardens.”
Sven’s mom, Barb Krebs, will also be on hand with “plantings in unusual containers.”
Reynolds said Bowman will not only have his photography on display, but the hat racks he makes out of old horseshoes will be available for sale as well.
Mary Leu will again be at the show with her batiks and hand-painted stemware.
There is no admission charge to the Ten Friends Arts and Crafts Show, which is being held in conjunction with the museum’s Holiday Open House when no museum admission is charged.
During the Ten Friends show, the museum gift shop will also be open and several Native American crafters and artisans will also have displays and articles for sale. For more information, call 970/249-3098.
