Swanky Buckle ‘Adds a Niche’ to M.V. Shopping Experience

MOUNTAIN VILLAGE – Stepping into the Swanky Buckle, Mountain Village’s newest (and only) women’s boutique is a sensory immersion.

The store is lavishly saturated in color and texture; deep denim blues, creamy silks, plush purples and gunmetal grays paint the store’s racks and line its shelves, enveloping the store in the rich hues and tactile fabrics of cutting-edge fashions.

The Swanky Buckle is a far cry, in other words, from the ski-and-snowboard gear-centered shops that have heretofore been the centerpiece of Mountain Village’s shopping experience.

The new Telluride Ski and Golf-owned boutique’s individuality amid the Mountain Village’s sports-centered retail monopoly was by design, says TSG Retail Manager Elaine Giuliani.

“It adds a niche to the Mountain Village’s shopping experience, which was our goal,” Giuliani says of TSG’s Swanky Buckle, which opened November 26.

Giuliani describes the store’s “niche” as an upscale women’s clothing-and-accessories boutique that brings an element of high fashion to Mountain Village thanks to its well-thought-out combination of up-and-coming as well as established designers.

“It’s style for Telluride, with clothes for everyday to the big event,” Giuliani says, noting that the store also provides a wide selection of price points to fit nearly every budget.

Swanky Buckle showcases some of the fashion world’s greats, like designer Adriano Goldschmied, formerly the designer of AG Denim and now the mastermind behind Goldsign denim; Karen Zambos, who has earned accolades thanks to her penchant for utilizing vintage fabrics in contemporary clothing designs; and Michelle Dahan, whose Gold Hawk line puts a spin on the fashion world’s romantic vintage trends. Line Knitwear also delivers a contemporary twist on old classics, with their trendy (and perfect for Telluride) sweaters.

But, as Giuliani is quick to note, the Swanky Buckle isn’t all about top-line designer clothing. Fun-to-funky accessories have their place here as well, with boisterous jewelry from California-based Love Heals, cozy printed cashmere scarves from We Are Owls, and sheepskin boots, “redefined,” from Koolaburra. This holiday season, stocking stuffers like Hobo Wallets, as well as La Mer bracelet watches, have been popular, Giuliani reports.

The store also sells home and beauty products with an extra feminine touch, like aromatic candles and decadent lip gloss, from Tocca Fragrance Company.

Giuliani admits that she has found an inspiring pet project in the Swanky Buckle. Prior to the Swanky Buckle’s opening this winter, Giuliani was involved with the Telluride AIDS Benefit Fashion Show, which sparked her passion for fashion and broadened her exposure to the fashion world. Recent trips to Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York City to meet designers and attend fashion shows further amplified Giuliani’s enthusiasm for bringing “swanky” style to Mountain Village.

The store’s function as a respite from the Mountain Village’s gear-heavy retail collection has additionally provided a source of excitement for Giuliani and TSG.

“As a ski company, we have a vested interest in the vitality of the Mountain Village core. As property owners in the core, we welcomed the opportunity to create more vitality by establishing a greater shopping experience here,” she says of the recent opening of the Swanky Buckle, which joins other recent TSG retail ventures Telluride Naturals, Gold Hill Gallery, and the Telluride Resort Store – which all together have virtually doubled the Mountain Village’s shopping opportunities.

“We’re excited to be an addition to the merchant community here, and hope we can pave the way for other stores that can further create a more diverse shopping experience in the future,” she says.

The Swanky Buckle is open daily, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will be open during the summer as well. The store is located in the Mountain Village core, across from BootDoctors.
